Scenic Features to Explore on Your DC Guided Tour

You’ve boarded the charter bus and you’re about to embark on an exciting Washington, D.C tour. What should you keep an eye out for, though? Of course there are amazing monuments built for the nation’s most influential presidents and peacemakers. There are some natural features that are just as momentous to see, though. These are just a few of the gorgeous scenic features to keep an eye on when you’re on the charter bus:

The Potomac River

Many national monuments you’ll see on your tour will take you by or across the biggest monument of them all—the Potomac River. This famous river, upon which Washington, D.C. was built around, runs over 400 miles from West Virginia to Maryland. Nicknamed “the Nation’s River”, the Potomac carries much of the United States’ history, from the Native American tribes who called it home to the Civil War.

Cherry Blossom Festival

If your tour group is visiting D.C. in the springtime, you can’t miss the National Cherry Blossom Festival. 3,000 cherry blossom trees were gifted to the U.S. from the Japanese in 1912, and they’ve become a symbol of friendship for both nations. Every spring, the cherry blossoms bloom white and pink along the Potomac. The Festival itself runs for four weekends, celebrating the blossoms themselves and the friendship they represent.

The Reflecting Pool

When you visit the Lincoln Memorial, you’ll undoubtedly walk along the Reflecting Pool. While a manmade feature, the Pool and the surrounding park area are beautiful areas to explore. As you sit on one of the benches, you might see a curious little squirrel scurrying across the grass, or a goose picking at insects along the ground. While at the Reflecting Pool, don’t forget to reflect on the storied history of peace protests and rallies that have changed a nation.
