The Washington Monument was supposed to look a lot different when planning started in 1783. When the on and off construction finally wrapped up in 1888, it strayed far from the original pantheon design. There was supposed to be a temple that contained different statues from the era, with Washington on top and the obelisk coming out from the center. Instead, there’s just one 555-foot-tall obelisk.
